The background the Phantom LE projected was stunningly black. Notes appear as if out of thin air within a palpably three-dimensional soundscape. There's a real holography to it that I can't describe as anything else but wholly convincing. Notes don't sound like sonic wraiths that you could seemingly poke your finger through. Neither do they feel like dense bodies tethered together by warm air. They sounded convincing, clear and accurate all the while

Now, the top-end rise does nudge the Phantom a hair closer to neutral. It's a miiiinute change - and tonal transparency is still there - but it does now have the slightest hint of it-sounds-good-with-everything. Hearing my own recordings on it, I did feel slightly flattered.  But nevertheless, I think the trade-offs in engagement, vibrance and stage construction are beyond worth it. Coming from a Phantom lover, that's saying something.
